The Human Republic (or Estherkiri Republic as called by the older generations) is a democratic nation founded in 1401.
Government
The government is divided into three branches; the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branch. The Legislative branch, made up of Congress and Senate, include representatives of every community who vote on laws and certain actions. The Judicial Branch, made up of the Supreme Court, interprets laws, decides if they are constitutional and decides the fate of criminals. The Executive branch is made up of the President, his advisers, governors, the military, and the police. They enforce the laws and command military or police actions. Citizens vote for governors, representatives, and presidents. There are currently two political parties, Traditionalists (conservative group who favors small government and religious society) and Progressives (liberal group who favor larger government, individual rights, and scientific society.)
History
In 1379, the Estherkiri Empire experienced revolution. The people had had enough of monarchies, and they wanted change. The War for Democracy was waged, and many lives were lost. The sacrifice was not in vein, for in 1401, the Human Republic was formed.
The early years of the Republic were chaotic. The first election had five political parties; Democratic, Aristocratic, Theocratic, Fascist, and Anarchist. The Democrats won almost unanimously. Theodore Attucks, a general in the Anti-Imperial army, was widely considered a good president. He solved most of the economic problems caused by the war, cleaned the streets of the "government in collapse" crime wave, and removed all traces of the monarchy from the government. The Democratic Party continued it's reign for 36 years (9 presidents).
In 1437, the Democratic party split in two, the Traditionalists and Progressives. The Traditionalists were favored by the Upper and Upper Middle classes, while the Lower Middle and Lower voted Progressive. The other parties either disbanded or assimilated into the two major parties. The next few decades consisted of the tug-of-war between the two parties, the victories between each were almost equal. Then, in 1541, a third party rose to power, the Moderates. They were beloved by the people who were tired of bipartisan bickering slowing the progress of the republic. One of the most successful Moderates was Buchwald Horowitz (elected 1621). It was under his command that the Republic won the Leviathan War, fought against a race of sea monsters that destroyed several towns. He also fought in the final battle from his airship, a feat that made him a legendary figure in Republic history. In 1632, the Moderate party was disbanded due to a lack of support because of mediocre candidates.
The current President is Thaddeus Buchanan, a Progressive with a Moderate spirit. He was elected in 1653, winning support due to his Progressive social views, but his Traditionalist economic and military views.
